Diplomático
Diplomático , in Germany Botucal , is the name of a series of premium rums that are produced in Venezuela by the Destilerías Unidas. Distilled in copper pot stills from molasses , the Diplomático matures in former whiskey barrels made of white oak . With these bottlings, the manufacturer orients itself on the old Venezuelan style with heavy and warm tones.
The three most important representatives of the rum range are:
- Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva , in Germany Botucal Reserva Exclusiva 12 - with an average age of 12 years
- Diplomático Reserva , in Germany Botucal Reserva 8 YO - with an average age of 8 years
- Diplomático Añejo , in Germany Botucal Añejo - with an average age of 7 years
These three rums won a total of 14 medals at the 2007 International Spirits Competitions. The Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva was “Best of Category and Gold Medal Winner” at the International Cane Spirits Festival, “Gold Medal Winner” at the Beverage Testing Institute Chicago and “Medal Winner” at the International Rum Festival. The assortment under the name Botucal or Diplomático extends to a white rum ( Blanco ), another high-quality rum ( Ambassador ) as well as various vintage types and liqueurs .
The discounter ALDI has owned the trademark rights to the Diplomat brandy for many decades and therefore led a lawsuit lasting several years against the Destilerías Unidas, which ultimately lost it. Since March 2012 the rum is no longer allowed to use the name Diplomático in Germany and has been sold under the name Botucal since then . The new name comes from a growing region of sugar cane from which the Destilerías Unidas distills rum. It is derived from the local term botuka , which means something like green hill .
