Beverage Testing Institute

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The American Beverage Testing Institute (BTI) publishes test reports on wines , beers and spirits . The test reports appear on the website, in a newsletter and every two months in the printed magazine Tastings . The test reports are also taken from renowned (specialist) magazines.

The institute was founded in Chicago in 1981 . It claims of itself to conduct fair and impartial tests and to publish the results for consumers .

Appraisal system

All tasters are seasoned professionals who work as retailers, restaurateurs, or are known as writers. In addition, they must have particularly good knowledge of the beverage category to be tasted and be familiar with blind tasting .

The beverages tested receive a value on a scale of up to 100 points with the following classification:

Points evaluation
96 to 100 Superlatives ( superlatives )
90 to 95 Exceptionally ( Exceptional )
85 to 89 Highly recommended ( Highly Recommended )
80 to 84 Recommended ( Recommended )
under 80 Not recommended ( Not Recommended )

There is also the Best Buy rating for wines or spirits with an unusually good price-performance ratio. Wines that, according to the BTI, will improve significantly in the next three to five years receive the title Cellar Selection .
