The chorale is exposed for a four-part choir (SATB) and consists of seven chorale lines.
The lines are unevenly long (4-7 bars) and deal with the surrender of the lyrical self to the Lord .
Lines 5 and 6 form an oxymoron ("I live for you - I die for you"), the effect of which is reinforced by the fact that both lines have the same rhythm and a general pause is prescribed at the beginning of the lines - the lyric self pauses briefly.
The chorale was used, among other things, in Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's oratorio Paulus with a different melody. For this purpose, Julius Schubring suggested further editing of the text, which, however, was rejected by Mendelssohn. It was mainly about theological concretizations.
