Julius Schubring (theologian)
Julius Schubring (born June 2, 1806 in Dessau ; † December 14, 1889 there ) was a Protestant pastor and consistorial councilor in Dessau. He became known through his friendship and collaboration with Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy .
After studying in Leipzig and Berlin , Schubring became tutor to Friedrich Schleiermacher in 1828 . In 1830 he returned to his hometown as a teacher, where he became a substitute in 1831, deacon in 1832 and pastor in 1837. From 1870 also consistorial councilor , he worked until his retirement in 1883.
Schubring was the author of the libretto for the oratorio Paulus , which premiered in 1836, and advised Mendelssohn on the composition of Elijah , which premiered in 1846. His son, Julius Schubring , published the correspondence between his father and Mendelssohn in 1892.
The University of Halle awarded Schubring an honorary theological doctorate .
