DiskCryptor ( dcrypt ) is free software ( GPLv 3) for Windows operating systems for encrypting hard disks and removable media.
It currently supports Windows NT-based operating systems from Windows 2000 up to and including Windows 8.1 .
functionality
The symmetrical cryptosystems AES 256, Twofish , Serpent or cascades from them can be used for encryption in XTS mode.
Existing partitions can be encrypted on the spot. Passwords can be cached and encrypted data carriers are automatically integrated by default. As a result, a password only has to be entered once per session in order to be able to automatically open all data carriers that are accessible with it.
Encryption of the system partition
DiskCryptor is the first program under GPL for the complete encryption of (Windows) system partitions. It also supports hibernation on encrypted systems . The password for starting the operating system is entered in the own boot loader ( pre-boot authentication ), which is also on external storage media and can be started from there. DiskCryptor supports both Windows and Linux boot loaders.
history
The first public version appeared on November 19, 2007. Version 0.3 from July 17, 2008 is the first stable version.
From version 0.1 to 0.4 the file format of TrueCrypt was used. With version 0.5 of December 26th, 2008, the data format was adapted and incompatible with that of TrueCrypt. Up to version 0.2 beta DiskCryptor also contained TrueCrypt source code.
The program was not further developed for years from 2014.
In January 2020, the further development of DiskCryptor was resumed.
