DoNotPay (also: robot attorney or robo attorney) is a social network that is mainly used by law seekers for simple legal questions. DoNotPay originally enabled its users to specify various legal questions based on preset questions / answers and to determine whether an objection, e.g. B. against a penalty mandate for illegal parking is successful or not and to write an objection and has meanwhile been significantly expanded.

The programming languages behind the application are O.js , jobscript , PHP , combined with IBM Watson .

Motivation and basic version

The founder of DoNotPay, Joshua Browder , has annoyed himself several times about penalties for illegal parking. The people are being abused by the city administration as a source of income. With fines for wrong parking and other traffic sins, New York alone earned around 1.9 billion US dollars in 2015 (in Germany, the municipalities are said to have received around 850 million euros from parking tickets in 2013 alone).

The success rate for appeals against penalty mandates by DoNotPay is between 47 and 64 percent. The app has been available in London since 2015 and in New York since March 2016. A total of around 250,000 tickets had been contested by mid-2016, 160,000 of them successfully. By mid-2017, his already 375,000 penalty mandates for illegal parking with DoNotPay had been challenged and the service was extended to all 50 states in the USA.

Expansion of the app

The program was subsequently expanded and should now also include B. Helping refugees to obtain asylum (asylum procedures in the USA, Canada and the UK ) with simple lawsuits, asserting claims in the event of flight delays, etc.

anonymity

According to Joshua Browder, the data entered in the app are only saved for as long as absolutely necessary and then deleted.

The website itself does not comply with the mandatory legal requirements of the United Kingdom or another member state of the European Union with regard to the disclosure of the operator and the person responsible. The donotpay.co.uk domain is registered with Joshua Browder. The domain donotpay.com , which is forwarded to, is only registered with the web hosting service provider (Namecheap Inc.) in Panama without specifying the person.
