Dobbs & Poensgen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The company S. Dobbs & E. Poensgen , based in Aachen, was one of the first manufacturers of steam locomotives in Germany.

history

Samuel Dobbs, who was one of the founders of the company, had worked as a technician since the 1820s, constantly improving the steam engine systems he developed. In 1832 he left the Englerth , Reuleaux & Dobbs company and was initially involved with Franz Nellessen from 1833 to 1836 and then with Eduard Poensgen (1806–1871) from 1837 to 1841 in two other mechanical engineering companies in Aachen.

In 1837 the last-named plant received approval to set up a boiler shop in front of the Kölner Tor and was one of the first locomotive suppliers in Germany, on whom the hope rested that a railway industry based in Germany would make it independent of imports from England and Belgium. This hope was initially not fulfilled, as only two locomotives could be delivered. In both machines, which were among the first steam locomotives built in Germany, the cylinders were in the smoke chamber. The 1A1 locomotive Carolus Magnus , built under the factory number 1 for the Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft , ran for the first time with a construction train to the Nirmertunnel on September 10, 1839. No further deliveries of locomotives are known. In addition to the steam locomotives, steam engines and steam boilers were also manufactured.

The Dobbs & Poensgen company was auctioned in 1842 and has not existed under that name since.
