Docupedia contemporary history

Docupedia Contemporary History is an open access online reference work on contemporary history and provides a broader public with basic knowledge on contemporary history research.

Project

The Docupedia contemporary history project is editorially and technically supervised by the Leibniz Center for Contemporary History Research Potsdam (ZZF) and is part of the specialist information offerings of the association Clio-online - Historisches Fachinformationssystem e. V. The continuously growing range of the online reference work in 2019 comprised around 160 articles. Docupedia was created as part of a project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) from 2008 to 2012 in cooperation with the Institute for Historical Sciences and the Computer and Media Service of the Humboldt University in Berlin and was also supported by the Federal Foundation for the Processing of the SED- Dictatorship promoted. On February 11, 2010, the website went online with an initial inventory of around 20 articles .

Content

Docupedia Contemporary History contains articles on central topics, terms and debates that are important in contemporary historical research. The articles are divided into the categories basics , terms , methods , research fields , debates , countries and classics and each appear with references to further material such as literature and web resources. It is part of the concept of Docupedia Contemporary History to deal with current questions and debates from research practice and the self-image of contemporary history and also to take interdisciplinary connections into account. Project manager Jürgen Danyel regards Docupedia contemporary history as an experimental form:

"What we're doing is a media experiment [...]."

Scientists can be approved as authors by the editorial staff working at the ZZF and the scientific editorial board. The current 36 editors work at historical research institutions in German-speaking countries and examine the articles in a blind peer review process before publication. The authors can update their articles. With this concept, Docupedia-Zeitgeschichte is positioned “in the middle between traditional printed journals and Wikipedia ”. The professional quality thus ensured is increasingly leading to the use of Docupedia contributions in university teaching and thus complements the goal of internal academic communication with the imparting of contemporary knowledge.

Docupedia-Zeitgeschichte uses the MediaWiki software to process its content dynamically and so that it can be reused. For such re-use, however, the consent of the rights holder must be obtained and a copyright notice must be added, if the authors have not explicitly released their contributions under a Creative Commons license. Docupedia-Zeitgeschichte is a word mark registered by ZZF 2009 .
