Dodrans

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The dodrans is a bronze coin that was minted during the time of the Roman Republic .

The dodrans did not play a major role in Roman coinage. Its value is 9 Unciae . This value is made up of the three value balls that can be seen on the lapel (each value ball stands for one uncia) and the character “S”, which can also be found on the semisses . The "S" stands for half an ace , ie for 6 unciae.

Altogether only two types of Dodrans have been found so far, all around the year 125 BC. Were minted. The first mint took place under the mint master Marcus Caecilius Metellus , the second under Gaius Cassius Parmensis . After that the minting of this nominal was stopped.

On the obverse of all types the bust of the volcano looking to the right can be seen, who wears a cap with a laurel wreath and has pincers over his shoulder; on the lapel a prora pointing to the right , above it is the name of the mint master, below it "Roma". The stamps are in front of the Prora.
