The Erfurt Domberg , also Domhügel , formerly called Unterberg , is located in the old town of Erfurt . The unique architectural ensemble of Erfurt Cathedral and Severikirche with its six towers is the landmark of the Thuringian capital.

As the last foothill of the Alacher Heights , the Domberg rises above the Domplatz . From this the 70 cathedral steps lead up to the hill. For the high choir of the cathedral, supporting structures (cavates) were built as early as the 14th century to enlarge the natural hill.

The Gloriosa bell from the 15th century hanging in the cathedral is one of the largest free-swinging bells in the world.

The Marienkirche on the Domberg is first handed down in a document in 1117. In addition to the two churches, documents also prove an older Paulskloster and a castle of the Archbishop of Mainz on or on the Domberg. The Toompea soon lost its military importance to the neighboring Petersberg citadel .
