The cathedral fountain in Augsburg was built in 1985 in the south of the east choir of the Augsburg cathedral on the cathedral square and consists of a group of figures of the three diocesan patrons Bishop Ulrich, St. Afra and Bishop Simpert. It stands on a small step and is made of Flossenbürger granite .

The cathedral fountain with three diocese saints

The life-size bronze figures of the three diocesan patrons closely associated with Augsburg are: Saint Bishop Ulrich , Saint Afra and Saint Bishop Simpert . Ulrich is shown on horseback with a raised cross in memory of his role in the battle of the Lechfeld . Afra is depicted during her ordeal , which, according to tradition, was tied to a tree trunk by being beheaded or burned. Simpert's attributes are an infant and a wolf, as tradition has it that his intercession saved a child stolen by a wolf.

The fountain is the work of Josef Henselmann (1898–1986), who had previously created the bronze high altar in the east choir of the cathedral. It is the last work by the Munich sculptor, who was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and who was the head of this university for many years.

The cathedral fountain was erected in 1985 on the occasion of the redesign of the cathedral forecourt, where there had never been a fountain before. At that time, the anniversary “2000 years of the city's foundation” was also celebrated.
