List of breeds of chicken

Dominicans are considered to be the oldest domestic chicken breed bred in the USA . They are called Dominique , Dominicker or Pilgrim Fowl . Their origin is unclear. They are believed to have descended from animals found in southern England and were widespread in the eastern United States in the 19th century. After the Plymouth Rock breed was bred from the Dominicans , the Dominicans became increasingly rare in the USA until they almost became extinct in the 1950s. But their number has increased again since then.

Dominicans look similar to the Plymouth Rock Chickens, but can be distinguished from them by their rose crest and less sharp plumage. Dominicans are a dual purpose breed that is able to forage for itself. The hens are considered peaceful, while roosters can also become aggressive and can kill small cats, snakes and even martens.
