Eduard Bruno Dürigen (born February 1, 1853 in Erdmannsdorf , Saxony, † February 12, 1930 in Berlin ) was a German zoologist and poultry expert. He was the first scientist to teach poultry breeding in Germany.

Life

Dürigen was born in 1853 as the second of four children of a master saddler in Erdmannsdorf, Saxony. His parents raised pedigree poultry and Dürigen already owned his own dovecote at the age of eleven, including colored pigeons and drummers, and he regularly visited the Chemnitz pigeon markets. In addition to pigeons and their breeding, Dürigen came into contact with chicken breeding as a teenager and made contacts with breeders. Poultry farming was a new area at that time, as it had only begun professionally in Dürigen's year of birth with Robert Oettel's poultry breeders association.

After finishing school in Zschopau, Dürigen trained as a teacher and taught from 1872 to 1881 in various cities in the Ore Mountains and most recently in Berlin. In the meantime, he learned from Ludwig Reichenbach in Dresden , who aroused his interest in scientific work in the natural sciences. Dürigen lived in Berlin from 1874 and studied botany and zoology at the Berlin University for three years - Wilhelm Peters and Eduard von Martens were among his lecturers - but without completing their studies. He came into contact with experts in ornithology and zoology, including Heinrich Bodinus , Alfred Brehm , Adolf Bernhard Meyer , Ludwig Heck and Karl Russ , with whom he met Isis in 1876 . Journal for all scientific hobbies and began to present his scientific interests in the expanding field of popular science education. In addition to his studies, he began to raise poultry, initially from partridge-colored Italians . He supplemented theoretical university studies with study trips at home and abroad; He also worked in poultry farms and in zoological gardens after his studies and from 1887 worked as a judge at poultry exhibitions. Also from 1887 he worked as a municipal administrator in Berlin and did not give up this position until 1906.

In 1906, Dürigen became Germany's first honorary lecturer for poultry farming. He now taught at the Agricultural University in Berlin, which in 1925 appointed him for the first time throughout Germany as an honorary professor for poultry farming. Dürigen specialized in domestic poultry breeds and founded a poultry museum at the university, which was attached to his institute. It emerged from the university's poultry collection and was enriched and expanded by Dürigen "over the years with a great number of valuable pieces". Prepared chickens from the collection, such as the Lakenfeld chicken , were transferred to the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin.

Dürigen died in Berlin in 1930 after a short illness and was buried in the old Thomas cemetery in Berlin-Neukölln. The funeral speech was held by Jan Gerriets-Purkswarf , with whom the Dürigen had a long friendship. Obituaries recognized him as “a pillar of German poultry farming” and “leading specialist in the field of poultry farming”. In retrospect, he was described as the most important poultry researcher of the first third of the 20th century.

Dürigen's written estate, including lecture papers, manuscripts and his library, have not been preserved.

Act

Dürigen was a recognized specialist in the field of domestic poultry breeds and published a lot. The main and standard work of contemporaries was the two-volume poultry breeding from 1886, the third edition of which was published in 1930 and which was also distributed abroad. Among other things, it has been translated into Spanish. Dürigen also trained practical poultry farmers with the support of the Ministry in the form of annual lecture courses.

He also worked on herpetological and terraristic topics and published the work Germany's Amphibians and Reptiles from 1891 to 1897 , which became a standard work on the amphibian and reptile world in Germany and only found a successor in 1996 with Rainer Günther's work Die Amphibien und Reptilien Deutschlands . For his work, Dürigen examined the herpetofauna in Germany, initially confining himself to Saxony, but later extending his research to Brandenburg and other parts of Germany. Dürigen was actively involved in nature conservation.

In addition to his journalistic and research activities, Dürigen was also a practitioner. He campaigned for poultry farming to be recognized as "an ... important economic factor" and called for higher production of eggs and poultry for slaughter. While eggs and poultry were initially mainly imported, Dürigen began to rethink. The first poultry farms on German soil came into being in the 1920s. "If today we in Germany are on the best way to become independent to a certain extent from the import of eggs and slaughtered poultry, this is due in no small measure to the fruitful activities of Bruno Dürigen", so a comment from the year 1930.

Dürigen was editor-in-chief and co-editor of the magazine Isis from 1876 to 1885 , and first editor-in-chief of the papers for aquarium and terrarium friends from 1889 to 1895 . From 1890 he was a member of the Association of Aquarium and Terrarium Lovers in Berlin and until his death an honorary member of the Club Berliner Taubenzüchter 1906 e. V. In Cologne he was involved in founding the Association of German Pigeon Fanciers and was the first secretary of the association.

From 1887 Dürigen worked actively as a judge for poultry and became a co-founder of the Association of Poultry Judges in the Province of Brandenburg and Berlin and its honorary member.

Honors and souvenirs

In January 1928, Berlin University awarded Dürigen an honorary doctorate. He received the title of "Honorary Doctor of Agriculture" in recognition of his "excellent service to the scientific and practical promotion of German poultry farming". A bust of Dürigen made for the occasion is displayed in the Humboldt University in Berlin .

In 2004, the Scientific Poultry Farm of the Association of German Racial Poultry Breeders was set up, which was named " Bruno Dürigen Institute " in memory of the pioneer of poultry research . In 2005, the regional association of Saxon pedigree poultry breeders honored Dürigen's memory with the Bruno Dürigen Memorial Medal.
