List of breeds of chicken

The Lakenfelder chicken is a breed chicken with defined standards.

Origin and characteristics

The Lakenfelder chicken belongs to the family of the so-called German country chickens . There are several explanations about the home of the Lakenfelder. According to one assumption, the breed is said to have originated in Westphalia in the area of Dielingen , near the Dümmer in Lower Saxony, others assume that the chicken was bred in the Dutch Lakerveld .

In 1854 the Lakenfelder were introduced under their racial name "Jerusalemer". The name "Lakenfelder" was also given to other farm animals, namely the Lakenvelder cattle , a breed of pigs or guinea pigs, as they are characterized by the typical "Lakenveller" color.

The breed was developed in the 19th century from dead leggers , campers and the Belgian Zottegemer chicken and is considered a dual-purpose chicken . The laying maturity is usually reached in the course of the 6th month of life. The first eggs weigh around 35 g and must therefore not be used for further breeding. Ring sizes: cock 18, hen 16

Existence and endangerment

The Lakenfeld chicken is rare and is considered an endangered breed of domestic animal . The BDRG and the GEH have classified the breed in the " Red List of Endangered Livestock Breeds 2013 " in hazard class III (endangered). After that there were only 308 roosters and 1227 hens in Germany in 2009.
