As color pigeons a group which is pigeons referred to the original form of the pigeon , the wild rock dove standing in body shape the next. It can be clearly differentiated from other race groups.

Color pigeons have the figure of a strong field pigeon. Their main distinguishing feature is the color and pattern of the plumage. They are divided into sub-groups according to their origin, which are regulated by the "German Pigeon Standard". There are group-independent European color pigeons, South German color pigeons , Franconian color pigeons , Thuringian color pigeons , Saxon color pigeons , Silesian color pigeons , Czech and Slovak color pigeons, Swiss color pigeons and non-European color pigeons. The description of the breeds according to their origin was not always carried out consistently. The standard of the ice pigeon did not take into account the fact that it was divided into belatted and smooth-footed: the ice-pigeons of Saxon origin carry mountain pines, the Silesian are smooth-footed, so they have no foot fletching.

In addition to the foot feathering (belatscht or smooth-footed), colored pigeons can also be distinguished by their head plumage. Some are smooth-headed, others wear hoods or caps. There are also colored pigeons with beak tips . The Silesian and Württemberger Mohrenkopf are special features . The Silesian Mohrenkopf is the only German colored pigeon to be dressed or stocked. The Württemberger has a short but dense foot fletching.

Many of the races are drawn similarly. There are shields among the Franconian, Saxon, South German and Thuringian pigeons. Swiss colored pigeons are divided into races with a shield. White tails and carrots are also drawn similarly.

The majority of the color pigeons distributed worldwide are of German origin. The African colored pigeon is the first domestic pigeon breed that was bred outside of Europe, in South Africa . It is the size of a field pigeon, is of medium length and comes in monochrome and hammered colors .
