South German color pigeons

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The group of the South German color pigeons , a subgroup of the color pigeons , includes several German domestic pigeon breeds , which were mainly bred in Württemberg . Breeding centers for the races are and were the Württemberg Oberland , around Ulm and Biberach, the Black Forest and the fertile Filder plain near Stuttgart. Their definition and thus their separation from other colored pigeons did not take place until the 1950s.

Color pigeons are similar in the drawing features. The pigeons of the regions differ in other external characteristics. The Württemberg color pigeons are smooth-footed or belatscht. Their mountain pines are less dense and less developed, like those of the Saxon colored pigeons . South German colored pigeons are predominantly capped and often wear a round hood .

The blue starter pigeon is not related to the southern German variants of the starter pigeon and is actually a Thuringian colored pigeon .

The assignment of the Golden Elbe or South German moon dove, a dove that is considered extinct, to the South German colored pigeons is uncertain. It was closely related to the Thurgau Elmer , a breed belonging to the Swiss colored pigeons .

The pharmacist Bayer also named in his brochure Die Süddeutsche Farbentauben , published in 1914, in words and pictures : moon pigeons , ringed pigeons , trout pigeons (= smooth-footed hammered ice pigeons), Nuremberg larks , Nuremberg flour lights, Franconian velvet signs and Nuremberg swallows . However, due to more recent findings, they are no longer listed as South German color pigeons.

Joachim Schütte called the "Handbook of pigeon races" and the no longer existing Karmeliertaube , the smallest color dove.
