Domus della Fortuna Annonaria

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Domus della Fortuna Annonaria (V, II, 8) is a well-preserved house from the second century AD in the ancient city of Ostia . The name is modern. It is a typical example of a private house from the high imperial era, which has some differences in plan and structure from the houses of the early imperial era, as they are mainly known from Pompeii . The house had a peristyle as the center (and no atrium), there was a nymphaeum , which is also typical of the high imperial era. Marble also plays an important role in the decoration of the house. The Domus della Fortuna Annonaria was probably built under Antoninus Pius . There have been several alterations, the last of which date back to the second half of the fourth century.

The main entrance to the house on the long side in the north is adorned by two columns. From there you get into the vestibule and from there directly into the peristyle (garden), which is surrounded on three sides by columns. In the middle there is a pool of water and on the back wall, which is not decorated with columns, there is a niche for a statue. The columns are made of travertine and were once stuccoed. On the right there is a triforium , the entrance of which is decorated with three arches and two columns. The triforium has a nymphaeum on the left with niches that must have once contained statues. The whole hall was once covered with marble. The wall opposite the entrance is an apse with a niche for a statue.

There are various spaces around the peristyle. A staircase occupies another floor. The house had its own latrine. Opposite the triforium is a room decorated with a black and white mosaic. It mainly shows animals and mythological scenes, such as Theseus in the middle or the she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus . An adjoining room has a marble floor in different colors.
