Donie Cassidy

Daniel "Donie" Cassidy (born September 15, 1945 in Castlepollard , County Westmeath ) is an Irish politician ( Fianna Fáil ).

In 1982 Cassidy was first elected to the Seanad Éireann for Fianna Fáil . After several successful re-elections, he was a member until 2002. In the same year he was elected to the Dáil Éireann in the Westmeath constituency. However, he was unable to defend his seat in the next elections in 2007. Instead, he was nominated on June 22, 2007 by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern as senator in the outgoing 22nd Seanad Éireann. The next Senate election in July used Cassidy to be elected to the 23rd Seanad Éireann. As a Senator Cassidy was from 1997 to 2002, and again from 2007 to 2011 parliamentary group leader of the government group ( Leader of the Seanad Éireann ).

In addition to his political activities at the national level, he was a member of Westmeath County Council from 1985 to 2003 and served as its chairman from 1989 to 1990.

Cassidy is married and has four sons.
