Donnie Dunagan (* 16th August 1934 in San Antonio , Texas as Donald Roan Dunagan ) is a former American child actor .

life and career

Donnie Dunagan was born in San Antonio, Texas, but his family soon moved with him to Memphis, Tennessee . His family suffered from poverty during the Great Depression . At the age of three, he won $ 100 in a talent competition in Memphis and was discovered by a film agent in the process. The family moved to Hollywood, where he appeared in a total of seven films between 1938 and 1941. He had a bigger role as the son of Basil Rathbone's character as the scientist Frankenstein in the horror film Frankenstein's Son and played as the murdered Prince Edward in the loose Shakespeare film The Executioner of London , each directed by Rowland V. Lee . At the age of eight, he had his last film role in 1942: He played the title role as a child in the classic cartoon Bambi .

Dunagan was already working on the lathe at the age of 13 after his parents divorced and the mother died soon after. In 1952, when he was 18, he joined the United States Marine Corps . According to his own statements, he became the Navy's youngest drill instructor and was also deployed three times in Vietnam , where he was wounded several times. In 1977 he left the army with the rank of major, he received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart three times . He kept his previous acting career a secret from his soldiers.
