In the double attack in Mogadishu on October 28, 2017 , two car bombs exploded in front of a hotel in Mogadishu , Somalia , after which assassins stormed the building and fought with Somali security forces over the next 12 hours. 25 people, including police officers, hotel workers and local residents, were killed; 30 people were injured. The Islamist terrorist group Al-Shabaab actually claimed responsibility .

Two weeks before this attack, on October 14, 2017, one of the most devastating attacks in Somalia killed 358 people and injured over 200 others. This attack is also attributed to Al-Shabaab.

In Somalia, many politicians and officials live in fortified hotels. These offer greater security than normal residential buildings.

According to police, the first explosion occurred at noon on October 28, 2017 near the Nasa Hablod hotel. The hotel is close to the Presidential Palace. According to Die Zeit, this is popular with politicians and government employees. Shortly thereafter, two more detonations were heard in the area. One is due to the explosion of an attacker's explosive vest. Five fighters from the Al-Shabaab militia are said to have stormed the hotel afterwards. According to the police, they holed up on the upper floors of the hotel. Security forces were able to save 30 people from the building after firefights in the evening.

After a ten hour siege, the police declared the operation over. According to local media, some attackers were shot dead and others were taken alive. A spokesman for al-Shabaab said the attack was targeting politicians and security guards at the hotel.
