Double beat (drum)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Double strike ( English double stroke ) called a playing technique for drummers and percussionists , with mallets on Membranophonen (rare on the idiophones the striking mechanism ) is common. This technique is primarily carried out on stirrer drums such as the Basel drum and the snare drum . It comes from military music , but is not limited to this.

In drumming a distinction is made between a single strike, a double strike and a press strike. With a double strike, the mallet springs back one more time on the instrument after an actively guided strike through the maintained finger pressure, so that two strikes are possible with one hand movement.

The double beat serves to execute multiple suggestions (double, triple, quadruple - also called flam ) and for the so-called double beat vortex, a "military" sounding vortex on drums . The double-beat roll is also sometimes performed on the kettledrum (also with soft mallets), although the single-beat roll is more common on this instrument.

The double whirl is learned with a preparatory exercise called a mill .

The term paradiddle describes the systematic alternation of single and double hits. This enables lively phrasing and quick switching between individual instruments.
