Dorabella cipher

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The three lines of the so-called Dorabella cipher

As Dorabella Cipher ( Engl. Dorabella Cipher ) is called a three-line supposed ciphertext , the Dora Mary Powell, born Penny (1874-1964) appended her Memories of Edward Elgar, first published in 1937, Edward Elgar: Memories of a Variation. The alleged cipher text was allegedly attached to a letter from Elgar's wife to Dorabella Penny's stepmother from 1897; on the back it supposedly said "Miss Penny".

The three lines consist of length and direction-related variations of the letter E. Until today the text could not be deciphered . Elgar's alleged authorship is indicated by the signature and Mrs. Powell's designation "the third letter I had from him, if indeed it is one". The whereabouts of the original is not known.

Four boxes of abandoned papers by Mrs. Powell (GB 1249 MS 5571) were given to the library of the Royal College of Music, London, in 1986.

Attempts to decipher

The Australian Tim S. Roberts suggested the following plain text in September 2009 :

"PS Now droop beige weeds set in it - pure idiocy - one entire bed! Luigi Ccibunud luv'ngly tuned liuto studo two. "
