Village of Sigmaringendorf

The village linden in September 2016

The village linden was a linden tree from the middle of the 19th century, which was located in the center of Sigmaringendorf . As a “beautiful linden tree with a uniform crown” it was entered in the directory of natural monuments in Baden-Württemberg under the number 84371050001. Due to its height of 16 meters, its sweeping crown and its central location in the middle of the village opposite the town hall of the municipality, the tree was considered to be a defining feature of the town.

In July 1931, several branches of the tree were torn off in a severe thunderstorm. Even then, some iron rings had to be placed around the tree for reinforcement. Due to age-related illnesses, the tree was no longer unbreakable in 2001 and felling was up for discussion, as the linden tree also towered over the federal highway 32 leading through the village and endangered traffic. At that time, crown anchors were used and the branches were shortened by four to five meters, which meant that the tree could initially be secured and preserved. In September 2016, an expert came to the conclusion that the injuries inflicted on the tree at the time caused further decomposition of the wood, which again meant that it was no longer resistant to breakage. The report described possible measures to preserve trees as "disproportionate". The essential load-bearing parts are "considerably damaged and no longer break-proof". The report therefore recommended the felling of the linden tree. The tree was felled in early November 2016. The experts who were entrusted with the felling then estimated the age of the linden tree to be around 175 years.
