Dorkas and Dorcas is a female given name . The name comes from ancient Greek and is translated as ' Gazelle '; such a named Dorcas gazelle exists.

Origin and meaning of the name

The name form for the ancient Greek name Dorcas, which was adopted from the ancient Greek translation of the Bible, means 'gazelle'. Her Aramaic name, which was also used, was Tabitha with the same meaning, which Luther translated as 'deer'. Tabitha was a disciple of Jesus who was raised by Peter . She was known for her warmth and willingness to help ( Acts 9: 36-41  EU : "She did many good works and gave abundant alms"). In contrast to the actual Luther translation, its revision uses the name Tabita according to the New Testament Greek original . This is also the case with all other German translations today. Thus the variant of Dorca disappeared in the more recent translations of the Bible.
