Locher doses or doses engraver (also milk can opener, milk cans Locher, Dosenmilchöffner) are kitchen appliances for opening Kondensmilchdosen . They consist of a handle made of wood, metal or plastic, which is provided with a metal pin at one end. This is used to pierce a hole in the can lid so that the milk can be poured out.

Another type of milk can opener is usually produced as a combination with a bottle opener ( bottle opener ). It either has a handle made of wood or metal or consists entirely of a metal strip that is formed into a bottle opener on one side and a can punch on the other. The can punch consists of a downwardly curved triangle with a hook underneath. The hook is placed under the edge of the can. Then the handle serving as a lever (or the side with the bottle opener) is lifted and the spike drills into the can. This creates a pouring hole.

A type of can hole punch that was no longer produced was also made of metal: under a metal plate was a pin that could be pushed or punched into the milk can with the flat of the hand. A variant of this type - which is also no longer produced - was made of wood and had two, sometimes only one, metal mandrel.

Glass containers with metal lids under negative pressure can be opened more easily if this tool is used to punch a hole in the lid so that air can flow into the glass container and the negative pressure holding the lid is eliminated in this way.
