Antarctic map from 1906 with questionable entry by Dougherty I. (Keates I.)

The Dougherty- or Keates Island was a phantom island in the South Pacific , which had been recorded in the 19th and 20th centuries on many cards. Sightings of the supposed island were made by Captain Dougherty of the James Stewart in 1841 ( 59 ° 20 ′  S , 120 ° 20 ′  W ), by Captain Keates of the Louise in 1860 ( 59 ° 20 ′  S , 120 ° 18 ′  W ) and by Captain Stannard reported by the Cingalese in 1886 ( 59 ° 21 ′  S , 119 ° 7 ′  W ).

In 1909, John King Davis was unable to find Dougherty, the Phantom Islands Emerald , the Nimrod Group or the Royal Island with the Nimrod .

Fog banks and icebergs are assumed to be the cause of the triple false sighting by Dougherty, Keates and Stannard. None of the three captains reported having set foot on Dougherty Island.
