The Drapacz Chmur (Polish for the skyscraper ) was built in 1934 according to a design by Stefan Bryła and Mieczysław Kozłowski in five years of construction. It is located at 15 Ż Wirki i Wigury Street in Katowice .
The "Skyscraper" was one of the many modern public buildings that were built in the southern urban area in the interwar period to underline the importance of Katowice as the capital of the Autonomous Voivodeship of Silesia . At that time it housed the financial authorities of the Autonomous Voivodeship of Silesia on its lower floors, while the upper floors were occupied by tax officials. The apartments were very luxurious and after the Second World War they were inhabited by writers like Kalman Szegal and Bolesław Lubosz or filmmakers like Gustaw Holoubek and Kazimierz Kutz .
