Revolving folding door

The hinged folding door is a special design of the entrance door in rail vehicles ( passenger coaches or trams ). In buses it is rarely used today. It consists of two door leaves that are attached to the car as a complete unit with a frame . Due to the special design, when the door is opened, the smaller door leaf (about a third of the total width) is pivoted inwards and the larger one outwards. This ensures that even when the door is open, no point protrudes more than 200 mm beyond the carriage boundary line .

An additional flap covers the lower step when closed. A lever attached to the inside of the door swings this flap upwards and to the side when the door is opened. In some designs, a lower step is mechanically coupled to the door and folds out when the door is opened.

The dimensions of the folding revolving door for railways are internationally standardized in leaflet 560 of the UIC Code. Some details are also required; Among other things, rubber lips are required as finger protection.

Twist-folding doors were installed in numerous passenger coaches from around 1960 to 1990. They are usually opened manually and can be closed manually or pneumatically . In newer rail vehicles, pivoting sliding doors are installed instead, which close more tightly, enable pressure upgrading and a larger opening width.
