The portable awards, medals and decorations of the Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary were the triangle belt worn. This tradition also passed on to the Austrian Armed Forces and other emergency organizations, such as the voluntary fire brigade .

The ribbon is folded into a triangle, provided with hooks and eyes and sewn on the back. The medal is now hung on the hook and this is put through the eyelet into the ribbon. This special form of ribbon was also adopted in some of Austria's neighboring states, such as Bulgaria , Romania , Slovakia , Serbia and the independent state of Croatia .

There can also be an adequate triangular ribbon for medals that otherwise have a normal ribbon. This is the case with German orders, for example, since Austria-Hungary and Germany were allies in both world wars . It also happened that a member of the Austro-Hungarian armed forces or the Hungarian armed forces (Honvéd) was awarded a German medal and then wore it to match his own medal on a triangular ribbon. Even today, awards are worn on the triangular ribbon in Austria and Hungary.

The triangular ribbons could be expanded with different editions, such as the imperial and royal bravery ribbon, matching the imperial and royal bravery medal .
