Drugubites
Drugubites were a South Slavic tribe in what is now Macedonia from the 7th to 13th centuries.
The spelling varies in different Greek text passages: Drougoubites / Drugubites ( Δρουγουβῖται ), Drogobites ( Δρογοβῖται ), Dragobites ( Δραγοβῖται ). The pronunciations Druguviten , Drogoviten and Dragoviten are also possible .
In the 9th century, drugubites lived around Veroia . In the 13th century, the area extended to Skopje . Dragovites are said to have lived in Thrace around Philippopolis in today's Bulgaria since the 9th century .
The Drugubites were first mentioned in 615 when they besieged the Byzantine city of Thessaloniki with other Slavic tribes . 617 and 676/678 they were also mentioned during sieges of the city. After that they were no longer mentioned as a separate group in historical events.
In 879 an orthodox diocese Drugubiteia ( Δρουγουβιτεία ) was founded as the suffragan diocese of Thessaloniki. After 1000, the Drugubiteia area with the themes of Thessaloniki and Strymon was combined into a Byzantine province.
