Drumcoltran Tower , also Drumcoltran Castle , is a tower house near the Scottish town of Kirkgunzeon in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. The classification was revoked in 2017. However, Drumcoltran Tower is still classified as a Scheduled Monument .

history

The Maxwell clan built Drumcoltran Tower around 1570. Structural changes were probably made in the same century. In 1668, the Tower House became the property of the Irvine clan , who modernized the interior during the 18th century. The associated farm dates back to the Maxwell times.

Drumcoltran Tower is isolated around 1.5 kilometers north of Kirkgunzeon. The four-storey defense tower has an elongated floor plan with a base area of ​​10.4 m × 8.1 m. The right-angled stair tower protrudes 6.2 m. It towers above the original tower, but has no battlements, but a waking dream. It is an addition from the later 16th century. In the quarry stone masonry, various bricked, elongated window openings are embedded. Inside the tower in the corner of the building, a staircase leads to the cantilevered battlement. The perched house closes with a slate roof . The interior corresponds to the typical structure of defensive towers. The kitchen is set up in the lower stone vault . The large hall on the first floor is equipped with an open fireplace. The upper floors were made of wood and are no longer preserved today.
