Dubh Loch Bridge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dubh Loch Bridge is a stone arch bridge over the Shira River , the last section of which is called Gearr Abhainn . It is located just south of the Gearr Abhainn drain from Dubh Loch and is part of the Inveraray Castle estate . A few hundred meters south runs the A83 , which once led over the Garron Bridge, which is also listed, at the mouth of the river in Loch Fyne . Over the Dubh Loch Bridge there is a connecting path between the different areas of the Inveraray Castle grounds, which continues up the Glen Shira valley .

The Dubh Loch Bridge was completed in 1785. As an architect, Robert Mylne was responsible for the planning. In 1971 the Dubh Loch Bridge was included in the Scottish Monuments List in the highest category A.

description

The bridge, made of quarry stone, consists only of a single segment arch. Some of the stones may have come from the nearby ruins of MacNaughton's Castle . The roadway is bordered on both sides by a parapet, which is decorated with crenellated patterns, cantilevered shoulders and incised crosses. The curved access ramps are surrounded by simply designed parapets and end with flat cap stones.
