description

The dining room

The central building of the four-story castle is a tower with a large hall . This is followed by four wings all around and form a square with four Gothic round towers at the corners . Battlements and machicolations (rows of machicolations ) on both the central tower and the corner towers are only used for decoration. The building rises over four floors.

The interior of the central tower is taken up by a single large hall with a ceiling height of 21 meters, making it the tallest room in Scotland. It is home to a weapons collection with weapons from the 16th to 18th centuries, including Brown Bess muskets, Lochaber axes , Scottish broadswords from the 18th century and the Rob Roys dagger .

Inveraray Castle is surrounded by a large, symmetrical park that blends seamlessly into the rugged Scottish landscape. The transitions are fluid.

history

Inverary Castle before the fire

In 1457 Colin Campell, 1st Earl of Argyll, built the first fortifications in Inveraray. However, the building was not used for long and was falling into disrepair. Colin's descendant, John , had the idea of building a new building and had John Vanbrugh draw up a first sketch for it, but only Archibald Campbell, 3rd Duke of Argyll , finally decided to build a new castle. To make room for these plans, the old town of Inveraray had to give way and was rebuilt a mile away. The work according to the plans of the architects Roger Morris and William Adam, which was based on the first design by Vanbrugh, began in 1745 and lasted until 1790.

After a fire in 1877, new architectural elements were added to the castle during the repair work. For example, the corner towers received conical helmets and the top floor windows with tympana .
