history

Ruins of Duchal Castle

The Duchal estate has been the site of stately buildings since the 12th century. A few hundred meters northeast of Duchal House stands a 24-meter-wide artificial hill that was once the location of a moth . Only remains of the wooden castle can be found today. The building in Anglo-Norman style dates back to the 12th or 13th century and has been classified as a Scheduled Monument since 2011 . Around two kilometers west of the manor house, a heavily fortified stone castle called Duchal Castle was built in the 13th century . Only fragments of this remain today, which are also protected as scheduled monuments. In 1710 a house was built on the site of Duchal House. During the construction of Duchal House in 1768, fragments of this building were likely incorporated into the new mansion. The client was Boyd Porterfield of that ilk .

description

Duchal House is isolated around 1.5 kilometers south of Kilmacolm in the middle of extensive property. It is built in the Renaissance style. The two-story mansion has a full basement. The east-facing front is constructed symmetrically. Doric pillars flank the entrance area, which is crowned by a triangular gable. The building edges are set off with corner stones . At the rear, a wing goes off at right angles, which probably comes partly from the house built in 1710.
