Duke of Albemarle
Duke of Albemarle was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England .
On July 7, 1660, the title was bestowed on the royalist General George Monck , along with the subordinate titles Earl of Torrington and Baron Monck .
The name given to the title refers to the Duchy of Aumale in Normandy , which has belonged to France since the Hundred Years War and which , like all of Normandy, was claimed by the English crown. "Albemarle" is an alternative name of Aumale, which is derived from the Latin name Alba Marla .
All three titles expired on October 6, 1688 when the second duke died childless.
