Duke of Inverness

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Duke of Inverness was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

The title was created for Lady Cecilia Underwood on March 30, 1840 .

She was since 1831 with Augustus Frederick, 1st Duke of Sussex , the sixth son of King George III. married, but the marriage was never formally recognized because of the Royal Marriages Act 1772 , so she did not become Duchess of Sussex and British Princess . So Queen Victoria eventually created her a title in her own right. The naming of this title refers to the title Earl of Inverness , which her husband held as a subordinate title since 1801.

Since she left no descendants, the title expired on her death on August 1, 1873.
