Edward Plunkett, 18th Baron Dunsany

Baron Dunsany is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

The family seat of the barons is Dunsany Castle in County Meath in the Republic of Ireland . It is probably the longest continuously inhabited building in Ireland.

Award

The title is the second oldest remaining title in the Peerage of Ireland after the Baron Kingsale . The award went to Sir Christopher Plunkett . The exact year and date of the award is not known. The title might have been created around 1439, but no later than 1462.

During the Glorious Revolution , the 11th Baron sided with King James II , which is why his title was revoked and his lands were confiscated. By the Treaty of Limerick he was rehabilitated and given back his belongings. However, he failed to take the necessary procedural steps for the formal recognition of his title, so that he and, after him, his son, the 12th Baron, were not invited to the meetings of the Irish House of Lords . However, it was only his grandson, the 13th Baron, who initiated the necessary procedural steps to be able to take the seat in the upper house again.

Today's title holder is Randal Plunkett, 21st Baron Dunsany, since 2011 .
