Duran Kalkan

Duran Kalkan (* 1954 in Karaisalı County in Adana Province ) is one of the key figures in the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). His code name is Abbas. Kalkan is of Turkish descent and is particularly responsible for the ideological orientation of the organization.

Functions

Duran Kalkan has been an organizational member from the very beginning and was a leader in various party committees of the PKK and its successor organizations. In 1986, at the 3rd PKK Congress, he fell out of favor during an internal organizational purge and was "arrested" along with other cadres. He was forced to admit guilt and, after self-criticism, rehabilitated and sent to Europe. In 1988 he was arrested in Germany and in 1994 sentenced to several years in prison in Düsseldorf. Kalkan, alias Selahattin Erdem, had participated in the liquidation of inner-party Öcalan opponents. In 1994 he was released and went back to the PKK. He was a member of the Central Committee and the so-called Politburo.

Kalkan is currently a member of the Executive Council of Koma Civakên Kurdistan , the umbrella organization of the PKK, which, according to the party's ideas, should form the nucleus of an independent Kurdish society beyond a nation-state, in accordance with the idea of “democratic confederalism” , a current that is ideologically libertarian Communalism is attributable. Duran Kalkan is also the chairman of the "Committee for People's Defense". On November 6, 2018, the U.S. announced that it would provide up to $ 3 million as part of the Reward for Justice program for information leading to Kalkan's arrest.
