The Democratic confederalism is the proper name of the ideology of the Group of Communities in Kurdistan (KCK) and the Kongra-gel and all affiliates of the underground organization working party (PKK) to form a non society in Kurdistan. This system is intended to create a democratic-ecological civil society in the Middle East, which should not aim to found a state, but to abolish the state and all hierarchies . The aim is not a Kurdish statehood or a confederation of sub-states, but rather the development of self-government through local community organization and without affecting the existing state borders. Ideologically, this current can be assigned to libertarian communalism .

This worldview was formulated by Abdullah Öcalan , who was imprisoned in Imrali . He was inspired by the writings of Murray Bookchins .

On March 20, 2005, Democratic Confederalism was proclaimed as a political concept. A little later, the founding declaration of the Koma Komalên Kurdistan (KKK), the predecessor organization of the KCK, was published in the Özgür Politika .

Democratic confederalism is the guiding political concept of the de facto autonomous federation of Northern Syria - Rojava .
