The Protoxerini are a tribe of the squirrels (Sciuridae). They include six genera with about 30 species, all of which are in Africa of the Sahara are located south.
These animals live in forests. In addition to specifically tree-dwelling species, there are also species that mainly live on the ground. Most species are relatively unknown and little explored.
A distinction is made between the following genera:
- African palm squirrel ( Epixerus )
- Sun squirrel ( Heliosciurus )
- Oil palm squirrel ( Protoxerus )
- Redshank Squirrel ( Funisciurus )
- African miniature squirrel ( Myosciurus )
- African bush squirrel ( Paraxerus )
The first three genera make up the Protoxerina group, while the last three make up the Funisciurina group. The Funisciurina were previously considered to be closely related to the Asian striped palm squirrels ( Funambulus ) and summarized as the tribe Funambulini, but the striped palm squirrels are now counted among the beautiful squirrels , another group of squirrels.
