Dwight Muhammad Qawi , short Dwight Qawi (born January 5, 1953 in Baltimore as Dwight Braxton ) is a former American boxer.
Professional career
Qawi learned to box in the Rahway State prison. He was released from prison in March 1978 and began his professional career a month later at the age of 25 without any amateur light heavyweight fight. The debut ended in a draw, he lost his third fight on points, but then began a long winning streak.
In May 1981 he won prematurely against former world champion Mike Rossman, a few months later, on December 19, 1981, he became WBC world champion by beating Matthew Saad Muhammad .
In 1982 he converted to Islam and changed his name.
He defended the title three times by knockout, but lost the belt on March 18, 1983 in an unification fight to WBA title holder Michael Spinks . He lost to Spinks on points, although he managed a knockdown in battle.
He rose to the cruiserweight division and beat the undefeated South African Piet Crous in the fight for the WBA title on July 27, 1985 by technical knockout in the eleventh round.
After successfully defending his title against Leon Spinks , he also made a unification fight against the young, unbeaten Evander Holyfield here in July 1986 . He lost this fight just on points and had to give up his belt. In 1987 there was a rematch with Holyfield, which he clearly lost by knockout in the fourth round.
Then he was opponent of George Foreman , who had started a comeback the year before, and lost again prematurely. In November 1989 he fought again unsuccessfully for the WBA cruiserweight title, which was vacant again after Holyfield's promotion to the heavyweight division.
He finally ended his career in 1992, but briefly returned to the ring for three fights in 1997.
In 2004 Qawi was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
