Eşref Armağan (* 1953 in Istanbul ) is a Turkish painter. He is considered a scientific phenomenon and an important figure in the modern history of painting.

The artist, who grew up in a middle-class family with a brother, is blind from birth , but paints objects and living beings like a sighted person. At the age of six he made his first drawings in pencil and scratched figures in cardboard with nails. His father, who recognized his son's talent early on, bought him miniature toys of people, vehicles and houses, which Eşref Armağan felt and then drew. He still uses this tactile technique today.

At the age of 18 he learned the art of perspective painting and used shadows in his pictures for the first time. He began to paint with his fingers - first on paper, then with oil paint on canvas and later, at the age of 42, also in watercolor . At the time he was already internationally known and art lovers all over the world were interested in his paintings. Initially, he only exhibited his works in event centers run by associations for the blind, but have now been shown in more than 20 exhibitions in Turkey and abroad.

In 2004 he was examined by the Canadian psychologist John Kennedy from the University of Toronto . The neurologist Alvaro Pascual-Leone from Harvard Medical School also invited him for an examination. The scientists observed his brain activities with imaging methods - it was found that these correspond to those of a person with normal vision.

Eşref Armağan is married to Nilifat Armağan and lives in his hometown.
