The EC Oilers Salzburg is an Austrian Hockey Association . The first team was meanwhile active in the third highest Austrian league, the National Amateur Hockey League and the Austrian Amateur Hockey League (ÖAHL) . The second team currently plays in the regional league Salzburg Ice Hockey Cup - Division 1.

history

The predecessor association, the “EC SPAR Oilers”, was founded in 1990 as a factory team of the Spar grocery chain, the actual association then in 2005.

The EC Oilers Salzburg took part in the Salzburg State League for most of its existence. Since they had dominated this in the previous seasons and had won the championship title three times in a row, the club decided in spring 2009 to look for a new challenge and move up to the league , the lowest of the three national leagues. The roster was expanded to include a few players in order to meet the increased requirements. Nevertheless, the Oilers did not get past last place after the regular season in the 2009/10 season and were defeated in 18 of the 21 games.

In 2010 a second team was founded and the training of the next generation began. After the upper league was dissolved, the Oilers started in the Tyrolean elite league. In 2012 the club was one of the founding members of the National Amateur Hockey League (NAHL), which lasted until 2014. After the NAHL was dissolved, the club entered the Carinthian League Division 1 for the 2014/2015 season and won the first national championship title in the club's history.

In 2018 the Austrian Ice Hockey Association launched the Austrian Amateur Hockey League (ÖAHL) and the EC Oilers Salzburg then switched to the new third division in Austria. Here they played the 2018/2019 season before the dissolution of the ÖAHL after just one season was announced in July 2019.

In addition to the Oberliga, the Oilers continue to compete in the Salzburg State League with a second team.

Venue

The home of the Oilers is the Eisarena Salzburg , which has a capacity of around 3,500 spectators and is also the home arena of the Bundesliga club EC Red Bull Salzburg and the women's team of Ravens Salzburg .
