eDoc server

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The eDoc server is the institutional repository of the Max Planck Society and a platform for making documents accessible in the context of Open Access . It is used by institutes and scientists of the Max Planck Society to record the scientific publications of the institutes or individuals. With a little over 157,000 data records, the eDoc server is the third largest repository in Germany.

The first prototype of the software was programmed by the Heinz Nixdorf Center for Information Management and the Fritz Haber Institute of the MPG in November 2001. There are 20 library “genre types” for the individual publication genres for input on eDoc. The server has been operated by the Max Planck Digital Library since 2007 .

The value and benefits of the eDoc server are controversial. Rafael Ball from Forschungszentrum Jülich criticized in 2004 “that this server is obviously less about professionally prepared and structured scientific information than about a public relations tool of the MPG. In fact, you can find a multitude of different information side by side on this server [...] ”.
