The ESOC Michelstadt ground station (formerly: ESA Groundstation Odenwald ) was the central receiving station for the satellite images from the Meteosat satellite . It was built in 1975 and was located in a depression north-west of Michelstadt and west of Zell in the Odenwald . It was widely known for its parabolic antennas with a diameter of 15 m and 13.5 m. The supported missions also included Hipparcos , the station was originally intended as the sole ground segment with a permanent connection to the satellite in the S-band.

Today the plant, which has been owned by the insolvent "Nachrichtenentechnische Systementwicklungsgesellschaft" (NTS GmbH) based in Munich since 2002, has been shut down. The only remaining parabolic antenna is inoperable and has been robbed of all its technology, and the technical building is also in a poor structural condition. There are no plans for reuse.
