The ESO Hotel is a building on Cerro Paranal in Chile that was completed in 2002. The architectural office Auer + Weber + Assoziierte was responsible for the planning. The client was the European Southern Observatory (ESO). The term “hotel” is misleading, as the building is mainly used as a place to live by the employees of the Paranal Observatory . The building is called Residencia by ESO .
Description / construction
The European Organization for Astronomical Research operates the so-called Very Large Telescope in the Atacama Desert at an altitude of 2600 m . The Residencia is located below the Paranal Observatory at an altitude of 2400 m. The building is built between the flanks of a basin, the facade faces west towards the Pacific. The structure is built entirely from exposed concrete colored in the tones of the desert. The central lounge and relaxation area is spanned by a flat arched steel lattice dome with a diameter of 35 m. In addition, green courtyards punched into the surface of the site serve to regulate the moisture balance.
The complex offers 120 rooms and public spaces such as a canteen, lounge, swimming pool, fitness center and library. Years later, Auer + Weber + Assoziierte described the building, which was handed over to its intended purpose in 2002, as one of the "most unusual and exciting building projects in our office".
In 2008, the ESO Hotel was used as the setting for some scenes from the movie James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace .
