Albrecht Beutel (born January 13, 1957 in Göppingen ) is a German Protestant theologian and has been a professor of church history at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster since 1998 .

Life

From 1976 to 1982, Beutel studied Protestant theology, German language and literature and philosophy in Tübingen and Zurich , in 1981 he received his first state examination for teaching at grammar schools, and in 1982 he passed his first church service examination at the Württemberg regional church . After two years as a teacher at the Schelztor-Gymnasium in Esslingen am Neckar , he became an assistant to Hans Martin Müller at the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Tübingen in 1984 . During this time he completed his dissertation, supervised by Eberhard Jüngel , In the Beginning Was the Word. Studies on Luther's understanding of language , with which he was awarded a Dr. theol. received his doctorate. In 1991, Beutel completed his vicariate in Kirchentellinsfurt with the second church service examination and was ordained . From 1991 to 1998 he taught and researched as an academic advisor at the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Tübingen, his habilitation followed in 1995 with a thesis on Georg Christoph Lichtenberg . Since 1998 he has been professor of church history with a focus on the Reformation, recent and recent church history at the Protestant theological faculty of the University of Münster. From 2008 to 2010 he served as Dean , a call he received at the University of Tuebingen in 2009, but decided to stay in Munster.

Bag is particularly concerned with the subject areas of the Reformation , Martin Luther , the history of the church and theology of the 20th century and the theological Enlightenment, with a focus on the research of the neologist Johann Joachim Spalding , for whom he launched an edition project in Münster in 2001 .

Memberships

Bag is among other things a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts and is on the board of the Luther Society . He is deputy chairman of the Scientific Society for Theology and co-organizer of the working group “Religion and Enlightenment”.
