history

When the EVR was founded after Estonia's independence in 1919, the new state railway took over a large number of former Russian locomotives. Until the Soviet occupation of Estonia in 1940, they could only be supplemented by a few new purchases for financial reasons, and the EVR therefore modernized its partially outdated vehicle inventory in its own workshops.

The locomotives taken over also included 16 pieces of the Russian series Н (N) from the years of construction 1903 to 1911, which were classified as series NK by the EVR . They were given the numbers 30, 31, 35, 40–49, 55, 56 and 65. From 1935, the EVR modernized six of these locomotives with the numbers 30, 35, 42, 43, 49 and 65 and designated them as Nkk . After the conversion, the tensile force was significantly higher than that of the Н (N) series. They also had a streamlined driver's cab and a blow-down device. The locomotives with the cylinders that were noticeably far to the rear carried passenger trains in the Estonian broad-gauge network at a top speed of up to 100 km / h until 1941 .
