Baron Cornwallis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Baron Cornwallis is a hereditary British title of nobility created twice; 1661 in the Peerage of England and 1927 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom . The first bestowal of the title expired in 1852 after the titleholders rose to become Earls and Marquesses Cornwallis.

First award (1661)

Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis

In 1661 the title Baron Cornwallis , of Eye in the County of Suffolk , in the Peerage of England was created for Sir Frederick Cornwallis . He was a member of the House of Commons for Eye and Ipswich and had already been appointed baronet in the Baronetage of England in 1627 . His great-great-grandson, the 5th Baron, was made Earl Cornwallis and Viscount Brome , in the County of Suffolk, in 1753 . These titles belonged to the Peerage of Great Britain . The baron title was henceforth listed as a subordinate title. His son, the 2nd Earl, became a general in the American War of Independence and was promoted to Marquess Cornwallis in the Peerage of Great Britain in 1792 . His son, the 2nd Marquess, left four daughters but no sons, which is why the marquessate went out when he died in 1823. His uncle inherited the other titles as 4th Earl Cornwallis. The titles finally expired with the death of the 5th Earl in 1852, whose only son had died in 1835.

Second award (1927)

Fiennes Cornwallis, 1st Baron Cornwallis

In 1927, the title Baron Cornwallis , of Linton in the County of Kent in the Peerage of the United Kingdom for the conservative politician Fiennes Cornwallis was created for the second time . He was a grandson of Lady Jemima Isabella, daughter of the 5th Earl of Cornwallis. The current title holder is his great-grandson as the 4th Baron Cornwallis.
