Earl of Berkeley
Earl of Berkeley was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England .
The Earl's family seat was Berkeley Castle near Berkeley in Gloucestershire .
Award
The title was created on September 11, 1679 for George Berkeley, 9th Baron Berkeley . Along with the earliest dignity, he was awarded the subordinate title Viscount Dursley . As early as 1658 he had inherited the title of Baron Berkeley from his father , which had been awarded to one of his ancestors on October 20, 1421 in the Peerage of England.
With the childless death of the 6th Earl on August 27, 1881, the Earls and Viscount titles fell to his cousin George Berkeley as 7th Earl. The barony, however, was inheritable in the female line and therefore fell to his closely related niece Louisa Berkeley as the 15th baroness.
The titles finally expired when the 8th Earl died childless on January 15, 1942.
